IT equipment, particularly desktop PC’s account for a significant part of an organisations energy usage. Using even the simplest of calculations there are compelling reasons to implement a pc-power management solution, for example:
If a PC is kept running 24 hours a day 7 days a week and is only used for 8 hours a day, then the energy consumed by the PC for the 16 hours a day it is unused is wasted. If you then take into account weekends and holidays, over 70% of the energy consumed by a PC left running 24/7 could be wasted.
The simplest way to reduce this wasted energy and still allow access for maintenance and critical updates is to implement an effective pc-power management solution.
IBM Tivoli® Endpoint Manager (TEM)—built on BigFix® technology - power management provides an intelligent, automated solution for reducing power consumption without adversely effecting computer use or administration. It does this by tracking the state of a computer (idle, active, standby, powered off) which will allow you to create power polices that maximise power savings. There are power reports that measure power usage, potential savings and sophisticated wake-on-lan capabilities to allow for maintenance and upgrades.
- Analyse current endpoint power states
- Reduce power consumption
- Manage Wakeup behaviour
Step 1: The endpoint tracks power states, active, idle, standby/hibernation and power off, it then presents the data back to the enterprise server and the end user. The following picture shows an example of the data presented to the end user as a result of the power analysis.

Step2: The endpoint can reduce the power consumption by controlling the computer power states and minimize the waste caused by computers running while not in use. The following picture shows an example of the tools available to the endpoint for reducing power consumption.

Step3: The endpoint and associated infrastructure can be used to manage the wake up behaviour of a machine, it can bring a computer online in order to take actions and manage a machine during specifiied maintenance windows. The following picture shows an example of the tools available for managing the wake up behaviour of an endpoint.

With IT making up more and more of a company’s carbon footprint, it is essential that companies tackle the issue of wasted energy, implementing an effective power management toolset can not only save money but also speeds up the process of reducing a company's carbon footprint.
